5 Steps To Valentine’s Day In Paris

February is here and on the 14th of this month, we will overdose on chocolate and roses as a tribute to love. We know that Paris is already branded as the city of love, but comment célèbre-t-on la Saint-Valentin à Paris? How exactly can one celebrate Valentine’s Day in Paris? We’ve got five steps to get you Parisienne ready for this day of love!

(Step 1) Ditch Pink, Reach For Red

Valentine’s Day is not the day to partake in soft makeup. There are 364 other days in the year to wear understated makeup. This night is all about accentuating your lips with a daring rouge lipstick. Choosing a red lipstick with blue undertones tends to flatter most skin tones and avoids giving off the dreaded clownish red lips vibe. We like Kiko Cosmetic’s Brick Red Matte Lipstick.

(Step 2) Big Bouncy Curls

Imagine yourself transported to the streets of Granada, Spain, dancing flamenco with your partner. The only style fitting for this night is big, bouncy curls. If your hair is naturally curly, enhance your locs by using a 1-2 inch barrel to tame the bits that want to do their own thing. Check out a tutorial below!

(Step 3) All Black Everything

Alright, now that hair and makeup are finished, it’s time to pick out an outfit. Since it’ll be cold in Paris during Valentine’s Day, a simple, black turtleneck, paired with a leather skirt or skort, fishnet leggings, and a trench coat will pull the entire look together. The face and hair are already bold, and so the outfit should be understated but classic. Forever 21 has an affordable and chic black leather skirt that we’re in love with.

(Step 4) Santé

It’s only fitting to grab a drink or two to begin the night. Everyone wants an epic story to tell their friends after Valentine’s Day and this usually involves going to a secluded and intricate restaurant or bar, and do we have an exciting bar for you! La Mezcaleria in the 3rd Arrondissement is one of those places that as you enter, your mouth drops. Its decor mimics that of El Dia De Los Muertos, or The Day Of The Dead. This is a Mexican tradition of celebrating their relatives who have passed away.

(Step 5) La Seine

Now that you’ve gotten a few spirits and bites in your system, it’s time to digest and enjoy Paris in the best way possible: A Seine cruise. No matter how many times you’ve visited or how long you’ve lived in this city, touring Paris at night on the Seine is simply mesmerizing and will make this Valentine’s Day one for the books!

Opinion piece: Questionable 2017 Trends

I’m not much of a trends woman. There will be certain small trends that I find really interesting, for example, choker necklaces because they remind me of my 90’s childhood, but typically… trends aren’t my thing.

Yet every year, I find myself scrolling through my news feed on Instagram and Facebook, questioning the meaning of life as trendsetters in the fashion and lifestyle industries take part in revolutionalizing the weird and impractical. Below are just some examples:

1. Feather Eyebrows

Why are you trying to resemble feathers on your eyebrows? It looks like your eyebrows slept for a century and work up with weird bedhead.

Screen Shot 2017-06-25 at 19.13.56

Why this has 50,000 likes is beyond me!

2.”Lollipop” Lipstick

More like “I just woke up and realized I made out with a guy at the club the entire night” Lipstick. #latenightregets Also, I don’t suck my lollipops like this. Who named this trend?

3.Nakefit

If you’ve ever wanted to walk barefoot on the street but were too afraid of getting some type of disease or getting glass stuck in your foot, 2017 has granted you your wishes. Nakefit lets you walk barefoot without having to worry about your sensitive feet. It’s just an adhesive that sticks to the sole of your foot and magically makes your cavemen/women dreams come true…

Screen Shot 2017-06-25 at 19.24.19

I can’t…

4.Unicorn Everything

This trend doesn’t have me cringing. In fact, I find it really fun. But IT. IS. EVERYWHERE!!! Beauty trends, I may understand, but even in foods like your beverages is too excessive for me.  Just looking at Unicorn inspired food photos gives me diabetes.

Oh, you looked at this photo? You have diabetes now.

A Wine Weekend Getaway to Bordeaux

Where to start with this amazing place!? It beyond exceeded my expectations. In my mind, I thought Bordeaux would be a relatively small town with not much going on. But, boy was I wrong. In fact, the city is relatively large, with around 200,000 inhabitants. Bordeaux is a picturesque city, with small tiny alleyways housing delicious restaurants and patisseries. I spent a long weekend there and a full day at a winery. So from my experiences, this is what I recommend for a getaway to Bordeaux.

Firstly it was relatively hard to find a place to stay online as the purpose of our trip was to visit the vineyards – which are about a 30-minute drive from Bordeaux in Saint Emilion. After speaking with friends we decided it was better to be based in central Bordeaux itself. We were so close to so many amazing restaurants, cafes and shops. Try and book somewhere that is moderately close to Place de La Bourse.

When it comes to food, I pride myself on being a bit of an expert. I am what some might call a foodie. However, I am also gluten-free. For any gluten free travellers out there, Bordeaux is perfect for you. We found one cafe called the Banana Cafe, so delicious and all gluten-free. I would recommend the pancakes, they literally blew my mind. On Sunday, we indulged in a traditional French brunch at Cafe Kokomo. This place is also incredible, great food, great service, great people and especially great value for money. Try their Acai bowl, it’s epic.

For sightseeing, I can’t point out one particular thing, the city as a whole is just so breathtaking. Make sure you just spend your time strolling around and getting lost in the little alleyways, we found so many hidden treasures. Although, you must visit Le Miroir d’eau. It is a water feature set up by the river. It is perfect for dipping your feet in on a hot day or go at sunset for a truly magical experience.

Last but not least, the vineyards. Bordeaux is famous for their grapes, especially those used for red wine. We did a lot of research as a group and decided that we wanted to visit Saint-Emilion as it is famed for being such a beautiful town. We then decided on Chateau Dominique, it offers both wine tours and also has a restaurant. The wine tour was in French but that was okay as we were able to practice ours. The tasting was awesome, and the man was kind enough to translate into English whenever we were confused. The Terrasse Rouge is the name of the restaurant which is spectacular. Meat on the grill is their speciality and when paired with the delicious wines made on site, it’s pretty incredible. Oh and can’t forget the view, request a table on the terrace to look over miles of grape fields and onwards to the hills – an incredibly tranquil and relaxing setting.

I hope you enjoy Bordeaux as much as I did, such a happening place with amazing food, people and sights.

3 Must-Go Rooftop Bars In Paris

Back in 2015, one of the students at IFA wrote about 3 must-go Parisian outdoor bars. Today, I’ll be continuing on this list regarding 4 must-go rooftop bars in Paris. Because, what would a visit to Paris be without a little bit of rooftop magic?

Nuba

One of my favourite places in Pars, this trendy rooftop bar is situated just above famous French fashion school L’institute Francais de la Mode (IFM). This bar gives you a great 360 view of Paris and their beach-like decor and vibe makes you feel like you’ve stepped outside of the city. In the summer months they open their bar throughout the day and have a live DJ set that plays everything from jazz to electro. Prices vary by drink choice.

Lounge Bar View Rooftop – Dandy Bar

Situated above the Novotel Paris Hotel, this new rooftop bar has already got people talking with interest. You’ll get a panoramic view of Paris which includes the famous Eiffel Tower. They’re having a bar opening this coming April 28th with happy hour from 17h – 19h and admission is free. Even if you don’t drink, you can grab a soda and get a glimpse of the view which is definitely worth it.

Novotel Paris Vaugirard Montparnasse

Rooftop Above Hotel Molitor

This rooftop is located in the 16eme where the famous art deco hotel, Molitor, is situated. Their pool and history is what attracts visitors, but their rooftop is definitely some place to see. Your view will be very exotic; introducing you to both nature and city life. There is a chef that cooks on the rooftop if you get hungry. My suggestion is that you call in advance to make any reservations. Especially if you’re not a hotel guest. Either way, it’s worth it.

“New Year, New You,” New Juice Cleanse!

As we put down our wine glasses and pick up reading glasses to re join the working world in the new year, we all think of our new year’s resolutions whilst thinking back to copious amounts of “treats” consumed over the holiday period. To help you wash away your multitudes of sins and start the New Year fresh, I am offering you some amazing juice cleanse options that will set you well on your way to your ‘new year new you’ mantra.

Wild and the Moon

This café in Paris should not only be used for your juice cleanse but also should become your go to for healthy delicious eating. Their juices are amazing, they are all made with fresh produce and you can buy them fresh every day. They offer singular cold pressed juices and infused water as well as your day long juice cleanses. They are also on Deliveroo, which makes them even more exciting; I mean who doesn’t love a healthy juice cleanse delivery right to your door. I did the one day juice cleanse and felt like a new person, I would highly recommend this, it gave me increased energy and I no longer felt sluggish.

BoJus

I did this cleanse just before a big hand in at school and it was called cure energy detoxification. I think the name says it all, I was feeling incredibly tired and drained, struggling to have the energy to keep my brain and body going at the speed it needed to. After doing this one day cleanse, I felt like a new person. My spirits were lifted and I no longer felt incredibly lethargic. It has high levels of vitamin C, helping to boost my immune system and fight off any nasty sickness that was lingering, alongside proteins such as raw cacao and spirulina which work together to cleanse your system whilst providing it, with the required boost.

Nubio Jus

This was by far my favourite; all the juices were delicious and easy to drink. Some people think you would spend the entire time feeling hungry but the juice cleanse is designed to avoid this. There are so many beautiful, filling, natural ingredients like nuts that don’t make you crave a giant baguette that day. The juices are also incredibly diverse. You don’t need to spend your entire time drinking a scary bright green drink but rather an array of coloured drinks tailored to different meals of the day. For example, at lunch time you might have a vegetable juice that acts on the same principle as soup. This is a great and delicious way to shock your system into its new healthy way of being.

I hope my experience with these juice cleanses is helpful for you. Don’t worry, I didn’t do these all in the 3 days since New Years. I love trying new things and have tested out a few of these over the past few months.

Note: I’m not a doctor. These worked and help me but everyone is different. Do your research before you start!

Happy juicing!

Isabelle

LaFashionWar : On Starting a Fashion Blog

Ever wonder what it’s like to start your own fashion blog? For many it’s a dream come true. But to become a famous fashion blogger takes a lot of time, patience and effort.

I got the chance to meet and befriend an upcoming fashion blogger, LaFashionWar, and got an inside scoop on her background on starting a fashion blog/becoming a fashion blogger.

tumblr_static_12op471w7o3k40w484oos8ss8

Joéva Celine, 22 years old. Editor and Content Creator of LaFashionWar

Joéva Celine, the pretty woman behind the blog, is French/German and was born and raised in Berlin, Germany. She moved to Paris (the city of lights and major hub for fashion) this year in order to follow her dreams. LaFashionWar is a fashion and lifestyle blog that was created in 2014. Joéva started the blog because fashion has always been a passion of hers. She loves dressing up, creating outfits and taking photos of her creations. “But it’s not only about this,” she says “My blog is also a means to express myself, improve my writing skills, help me grow as a person, as well as gain confidence.”

3The main platform she uses to write is Tumblr. She talks about what other fashion enthusiasts may be interested in: new trends, personalised outfits, fashion events and lifestyle topics such as travelling, sports and food, to name a few.

But those wanting to start their own fashion blog always wonder if there is a specific strategy that helps to gain more followers. In Joéva’s case, the best strategy to get more traffic on her blog is to collaborate with brands and other bloggers. “I mostly met my blogger friends during events like the German press days or fashion weeks. Press days are organised by agencies to show the press the new brands and collections that are being displayed or that they are hosting.” She also goes on to explain that giveaways is also a great way in gaining more traffic to your blog.

1When it comes to starting a fashion blog and taking those perfect Instagram photos, Joéva mentions that exchanging your modelling for a photographer’s portfolio could give you an advantage when you’re starting off. After some time, you may eventually have your own professional photographer. In the meantime, meeting other bloggers that would be willing to take pictures of you also is a good alternative. “When I started meeting other fashion bloggers, we would start meeting up every week and take photos of each other at fancy cafés and shopping areas. As everybody loves lifestyle photos, those were included too. Eventually we all became very close and created strong friendships.”

I asked whether there was something she learned through her ongoing experience creating a fashion blog. She said that, “… people think that it’s only about invitations to events, getting free stuff or gaining money… but people need to have a passion for fashion 2blogging. For me, I’ve found personal expression. And it comforts me that I’m leaving a trace of myself in this world. But also, it’s important to know how dangerous it is to post about yourself on social media. Knowing where you are or have been at all times. Also, people will perceive you based on what you post and your materialistic things, which is why it is always good to socialise with your followers and people in general so they know who you truly are.”

In the future, Joéva hopes to include YouTube blogging into the mix and be able to travel and share it with the rest of the world. She also hopes that her self confidence will get better in these upcoming years. Building a strong fashion network in places like Paris, Berlin, London, New York and Milan is also in the works!

If you want to follow Joéva’s adventures you can follow her blog, LaFashionWar, where you can find a link to her other social networks. Her main one, Instagram, is here : @lafashionwar !

Go have a look! And for those of you wishing to start your own fashion blog, never be afraid to reach out to those who have experience. Fashion is all about sharing ideas, the passions we love.

Bon courage tout le monde!

MERCI beaucoup! A VISIT AT THE CONCEPT STORE

merci red car.jpg

Merci

When you step behind the façade of 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais, the little red car marked ‘Merci’ welcomes you to another world in Paris. When entering Merci, the concept store, you first step into their café which leads to the library and that again leads to the huge spacious store. These days the must-visit store with the great vibe is getting ready for Christmas.

The store offers a great variety of products, starting from clothing and furniture to books to kitchenware. This great place to eat and shop at the same time is usually crowded and the staff is often busy. Yet I managed to talk to one of the sales assistants named Heena, in order to get to know a little more about the fashion department of Merci.

Who are your target customers?
I think everyone. We are not targeting anybody particularly. We have everything to offer, starting from 1 euro to 10.000 euros.

They say the products are very pricey. What do you think?
No, they aren’t that pricey but not cheap, either. The price is very fair because Merci offers the unique range of products and quality merchandises.

Which brands can we find here?
Talking about the famous designer labels, there is Alexander Wang and Isabel Marant. Then there are lots of brands which are very well-known in France.

• Best-selling product?
I think the ‘Merci Medal’ is very popular. This is a less expensive bracelet. A lot of people buy it as a gift.

• Please describe Merci in 3 words.
Elegant, fashionable and stylish.

>>>

The seven-year-old store Merci is a beautiful place to escape the city rush, enjoy quality shopping… or just to get some new stories and pictures for your Snapchat and Instagram. Go and give it a try!

An observation of an everyday Parisian woman from an everyday American female expat

As an American, I remember a time when I fantasied about living in Paris and thinking how amazing it would be to be a “Parisian woman”. First off, it seems like they magically never get fat. Secondly, their sense of style and fashion is on par and they don’t even need make up to look beautiful. Thirdly, they never get old (which is beyond me since half the population smokes cigarettes!) It seems like everything a Parisian woman does is just so effortlessly chic.. a sense of.. je ne sais quoi.

After 2.5-3 years of living in the city if lights, I’ve grown accustomed to the daily life of an everyday Parisian woman.

1

1Forget the cliché black and white striped shirts, and the rich socalites walking the streets of Paris with their thousands of euro outfits. Many everday Parisian women like to feel comfortable and free in their clothing – even during nightlife. Many of the girls end up going out in jeans (normally black) and a top that they feel comfortable in. Another nightlife style would be to wear black tights, a good length sized skirt and another comfortable nice top. Essentially, they dress appropriately for the occasion. And on many occasions, what you see them wearing during the day is usually worn going out at night as well. Depending on who you are talking to, you can find many younger girls shopping at vintage stores and going to a, what they call “vide dressing”, which is a large expo of fashion designer clothing, being sold for very cheap (even as little as 5-10€ per clothing item!)

2

T2he theory that French women do not get fat is, at least in Paris, essentially true… For the most part. I’ve met many women who could eat an entire farm (exaggerating of course) and not gain an ounce of fat. But with this being said, it all comes down to genetics and the quality of the food. Compared to the food in the United States which adds various amounts of chemicals and preservatives, the food here is, by a long run, much healthier. Also, do not let us forget that Paris is walkable. Not many people own a car. If they do take the metro, they plan on walking at least 2-5 minutes underground to get to the next station or the exit. It goes to say that women in Paris are more “active”.

You’ll see everybody eating a baguette because… obviously. The bread here is amazing. But they love to experience new foods as well due to the plethora of different restaurants to discover in this city.

3

3From what I’ve seen in my years here in Paris, Parisian women DO wear make up… but subtly. With the occasional few who really cannot be bothered. They’ll put on the usual foundation and concealer – but maybe with some natural eye shadow, mascara and some faint blush. When it comes to being bold, they tend to love their lipstick: reds of different hues, a natural colour, or even sometimes a dark purple. You will never see the everyday Parisian woman wearing a flashy bright pink lip colour (well maybe.. but definitely not many Kylie Jenners). The more natural they look, the better.

4

4This category really depends on the specific Parisian woman. For instance, people say all French people smoke. That just simply is not true. Many of the everyday Parisian women do not smoke and take really good care of their health. And even those who do smoke, usually look 10 years younger than their actual age.

You’ll find most all Parisian women (and men) in NON-TOURISTIC areas, as most French people avoid this at all costs. It’s quite annoying for them to be going to work and having a group of tourists block the entire sidewalk/metro entrance. This is typically when people say French people are rude… In which in this case, I guess I’ve always been a French woman.

When it comes to socialising with friends, I’ve found that many of them prefer to have an intimate gathering at someone’s home or at a restaurant. For those who enjoy the nightlife scene, they’ll have a larger get together next to ‘la Seine’ and then migrate to a club or bar of some sort.

>>>

Like I’ve mentioned before… the lifestyle depends on the persons and their interests. There is no “specific” thing a Parisian woman does that other women around the world wouldn’t do. Every country has their own way of style and living. In Paris, I guess it’s just part of their “je ne sais quoi“.
